Alternative Options for Mortgage Relief Assistance
Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Mortgage Assistance: FHFA is committed to supporting homeowners who have been affected by housing instability. Through government programs, they offer resources to improve financial housing situations and resolve issues with the entities they regulate, such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks. Homeowners facing economic hardship are encouraged to contact their mortgage servicer for payment relief options.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Homeowner Assistance Funds: For homeowners who don’t qualify for the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) but are facing financial difficulties, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) offers guidance on mortgage forbearance. Forbearance allows homeowners to pause or reduce mortgage payments temporarily. Eligibility requires experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic, and it’s applicable to federally backed and some non-federally backed mortgages. The initial forbearance period typically lasts 3 to 6 months, with possible extensions. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their mortgage servicer and consider consulting a HUD-approved housing counselor for personalized assistance and planning.
